Today we will discuss beginner drift platforms. It is nice if you want to start out drifting, but which car to take. We have chosen these cars based on the prise, amounts of parts on the market and reliability. Therefore we have put the most important data of each car together.
10
Ford sierra
Starting off at number 10 is the Ford sierra. De ford sierra has a nice FR setup and more than enough power to go sideways. As it is not the most popular model of ford you can buy them for a next to nothing. In addition, they have been used in ralleys a lot which makes them having a quitte nice aftermarket set of parts. The main disadvantage is that they are currently getting pretty rare.
9
Nissan Skyline R32
On the ninth place we have the skyline R32. This car has been made for racing and therefore they are popular since the day they rolled out of the factory. This model has a huge amount of aftermarket parts for sale which are focussed on getting your car sideways. The best choise is the GT-ST as it already has a FR setup. Otherwise you can go for the GTR, as you can turn that one into a rear wheel driven car by just pulling out one fuse. The reason its not higher on the list is that the the value of the car is still pretty high.
8
Mazda RX-7 FC3S
We couldnt make this list without adding the RX-7. It is a lightweight car which gets used a lot for drifting. Because of this, there is a large amount of aftermarket parts for sale for this car. The biggest setback however is that the engine needs to be listened to. As you can read here it is not the most easy engine, when comparing it to the other cars in the list. Thats why we have not put it higher.
7
Toyota Soarer/Lexus SC300
You can compare this car with the Sierra. It is a great platform which is not that common in Holland. It is a shame, as it shares many parts with the later model Supras. This model gets used a lot in America and Japan, which makes this car pretty easy to convert to a full blown drift car.
6
Toyota supra Ma70
This model Supra is not a super popular model as it has been overshadowed by its big brother; the JZA80. However it is a nice platform with a double wishbone suspension which can be adjusted for a basic drift setup without much trouble. Also you can get aftermarket parts for a low price. The biggest disadvantage is that the M series engines are not that happy if you trash them. However, they also came with JZ engines, so its possible to swap them. Another disadvantage is that because of the high weight and the three liter engine your fuel, road tax and insurance costs will be high.
5
Mercedes w202
As you want to have a reliable drift car, this is a nice choise. The parts are pretty cheap and you can find some pretty nice rare stuff in germany as well. The biggest disadvantage is that in case anything breaks it will be pretty expensive. In addition, because this car is -except for the enthusiasts- pretty popular with the wrong type of people, which gives this car a negative image.
4
Mazda mx5
The mazda is a good platform. It is cheap and you can find lots of parts. Also because it is pretty cheap, you will not have that many expenses. A disadvantage of the car is that it is troubled with a lot of smaller errors. Except for that it is just a 2 seater which makes it a bit less easy to use in comparison to the other cars on this list.
3
volvo 200 serie
volvo 200 serie
Just like the Mercedes it is a reliable model. It not called a tank for nothing. The price is low and so are the spare parts. Even though they are used in several races they do not have a large amount of aftermarket parts. The biggest advantage of this car is that no one will expect you to drift it which makes it a pretty undercover car. That is the main reason why we have put this car so high up the list. The biggest disadvantage are the fuel expenses and road tax.
2
Nissan 200sx S13
As a number two we will have the SX. This model has been regarded as a pure drift car (you wont see them drive on time attacks that often) and it has the biggest scala of aftermarket parts. You can go any direction with this car and you can be sure that somewhere someone already did it. However, it did not get the first place as the original CA18 engine is known to be not that reliable. Besides this the costs to maintain it are pretty high. If we were in America or Japan we would have probably given this car the first place, but as we live in Holland another car has taken the first place.
1
BMW E36
I know some people will be surprised to not find an ae86 on this spot. However as they are getting insanely expensive in Holland they can not be regarded as a beginner drift car. Instead the first place goes to the BMW. It is the most common car of all above in Holland, therefore it is really cheap and so are replacement parts. Good performance parts are better priced than the Japanese counterparts as these products have to come from the states or Japan, which makes them really expensive. In addition the layout is perfect and on top of that this model is pretty reliable. Thats why it has deserved its first place.
